At some point, most women experience heavy menstrual bleeding that requires some level of medical attention. Menorrhagia is the term used for periods that are both heavy and prolonged.

Causes of Menorrhagia

In some cases, the reason for heavy menstrual bleeding is not known. However, there are a number of conditions that could it. They include:

  • Lack of ovulation (erratic function of the ovaries)
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Uterine polyps in the uterine cavity
  • Generalized swelling of the uterine wall (adenomyosis)
  • Pre-cancer and cancer of the uterine lining (endometrium)
  • Early pregnancy
  • IUD side effect
  • Medications such as anti-coagluants

    Treatment options for this condition depend upon factors such as:

  • Your overall health and medical history
  • The cause and severity of your condition
  • Appropriate medications, therapies or procedures
  • Your lifestyle and personal preference

    Minimally invasive surgical procedures for the diagnosis and treatment of women suffering from menorrhagia include:

  • Diagnostic hysteroscopy (an in-office procedure)
  • Endometrial ablation (heating of the uterine lining)
  • Laparoscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroids by laparoscopy)
  • Hysteroscopic myomectomy (removal of fibroids by hysteroscopy)
  • Laparoscopic supracervical or total hysterectomy
