What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is an often painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus — the endometrium — grows outside the uterus. Endometriosis most commonly involves the ovaries, bowel or the tissue lining your pelvis. Rarely, endometrial tissue may spread beyond one’s pelvic region.
What causes endometriosis is unknown. There are many competing theories in the scientific literature. One is that the endometrial cells shed when a woman gets her menstrual period travel backwards through the fallopian tubes into the pelvis, where they implant and grow. This is called retrograde menstruation. This backwards menstrual flow occurs in many women, but researchers think the immune system may be different in women with endometriosis. There are other theories as well.
Endometriosis is common with some correlation due to heredity. Although endometriosis is typically diagnosed between ages 25 - 35, the condition probably begins about the time that regular menstruation begins.
Endometriosis - da Vinci Robotic Surgery as a Minimally Invasive Treatment Option
If you have been diagnosed with endometriosis, you should consider all your treatment options and work with your physician to identify the best treatment option for you. The da Vinci® Surgical System is one of the advanced, minimally invasive treatment options now provided by California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco. A new category of surgery, introduced with the development of the da Vinci® System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide to treat endometriosis. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate gynecological surgeries. Using the da Vinci surgery system, your surgeon has a better robotic option to spare surrounding nerves, cause less tissue damage, and overall have a minimally invasive method encouraging a better surgical outcome.
If your doctor recommends surgery – either endometriosis resection or hysterectomy - to treat endometriosis, you may be a candidate for da Vinci Surgery. Using state-of-the-art technology, da Vinci Surgery requires only a few tiny incisions, and thus allows patients to recover more quickly. The da Vinci System enables your doctor to operate with enhanced vision, precision, dexterity and control. da Vinci’s 3D, high-definition vision system allows surgeons to see key anatomy with immense depth and clarity– critical to removing deep endometrial tissue implants.
da Vinci Endometriosis Resection is a procedure that allows your surgeon to perform a thorough removal of deeply penetrated or widespread endometrial implants – while preserving your uterus. Unlike traditional open and laparoscopic surgery, da Vinci Endometriosis Resection offers the added benefit of computer and robotic-assisted technology.
If your doctor recommends surgery to treat endometriosis, you may therefore be a candidate for minimally invasive da Vinci Surgery. Doctors at CPMC are using the most advanced technology available, the da Vinci Surgical System. da Vinci allows the surgeon to operate through a few tiny incisions. Advantages include -
- Less blood loss
- Low conversion rate to open surgery
- Less risk of infection
