Radiation Oncology Team:

Radiation Oncologists

Radiation oncologists are physicians who earn a four-year doctoral degree to earn their medical degree and continue with their education to complete a four-year residency in radiation oncology specializing in the treatment of cancer. They consult with each patient and the patient's primary care physician to determine the best course of therapy and plan a treatment schedule. Then, they work with a medical dosimetrist to calculate how much radiation will be delivered.

We have four radiation oncologists on staff to provide you with personalized care.

Medical Physicist

Our medical physicists assure the safe and effective delivery of radiation to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic result as prescribed in patient care. The medical physicist performs or supervises the pertinent procedures necessary to achieve this objective. The responsibilities of the medical physicist include:
> protection of the patient and others from potentially harmful or excessive radiation;
> establishment of adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient dosimetry;
> measurement and characterization of radiation;
> determination of delivered radiation dose;
> advancement of procedures necessary to ensure image quality;
> development and direction of quality assurance programs;
> and assistance to other health care professionals in optimizing the balance between the beneficial and deleterious effects of radiation.

Medical Dosimetrist

The medical dosimetrists perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the radiation oncologist's prescribed dose, designs a treatment plan by means of computer and/or manual computation to determine a treatment field technique that will deliver that prescribed radiation dose. They documents pertinent information in the patient record, and verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations using a system established by the medical physicist. Additionaly they work with the radiation therapists in the implementation of the patient treatment plans including:
> correct application of immobilization devices;
> beam modification devices;
> approved field arrangements;
> and other treatment variables.
