Comprehensive COPD Clinic
CPMC's Comprehensive COPD program provides outstanding clinical care, patient education, outreach and state-of-the-art research for patients with chronic obstructive lung disease. The COPD team includes Steven Hays, M.D., Director of Advanced Lung Therapies, George Horng, M.D., Assistant Director of the Comprehensive COPD Clinic, Michelle Murray, R.N., MSN, Advanced Lung Therapies nurse specialist, Lorraine Anderson R.T., Respiratory Therapy Educator, Eric Hernandez, R.D., pulmonary nutritionist and Scott Plymale MSW, Advanced Lung Therapies social worker.
This diverse team provides a multidisciplinary approach to the management of COPD - combining leading edge medical services with nutritional counseling, respiratory therapy and oxygen education. We also collaborate with researchers to study mechanisms of disease as well as novel therapies for COPD.
Since we realize that COPD affects not only the lungs but the whole body, we have recently begun a collaboration with the Institute of Health and Healing to build holistic programs for COPD.
We will be launching our pulmonary rehabilitation program to provide more advanced educational services and monitored cardiopulmonary training. In addition, we will soon be launching a unique smoking cessation program that offers both traditional and holistic pathways to becoming tobacco free.
Our COPD team works year-round with our community on COPD awareness and smoking cessation. We hold annual COPD patient educational events where we provide spirometry screening and alpha-1 antitrypsin screening. We are also soon launching a San Francisco Better Breathers Club which will provide monthly educational and support group functions.
