    Layette and Nursery Supplies You'll Need

    Layette List

    The following list offers suggestions for the essential clothing and equipment needs of your newborn. Many of these items are available in the Newborn Connections boutique.

    Clothing

    • Diapers:

      • Disposable - 350 first month


      • Cloth — if washing own, 4 dozen (1 dozen cloth diapers for burping and general use)


      • Diaper service — 90 for first week
    • Diaper wraps or nylon elastic pants: 6 - 10


    • Diaper pins or “Snappis”: 4 sets


    • T-shirts: 5 - 10


    • Booties/socks: 3 - 5 pairs


    • Hats: 1 - 2


    • Sleepers or gowns: 5 - 7


    • Cold weather sleeper: 1
    NOTE: Wash clothes and bedding before using them.

    Bedding
    • Thermal blankets: 1 - 2


    • Lightweight, receiving blankets: 5 - 7


    • Crib sheets (fitted preferable): 3 - 4
    Miscellaneous
    • Soft washcloths: 3 - 5


    • Burp cloths: 1 dozen (cloth diapers work well)


    • Thermometer: Baby rectal; useful for taking either axillary or rectal temperatures


    • Baby scissors or clippers


    • Baby brush and comb


    • Mild soap (such as Mustela)


    • Hooded baby towels, optional: 1-2

    Nursery Equipment

    There are several ways to save money on baby items. Many items can be purchased second hand or through discount stores. Some items may be purchased by the case, such as disposable diapers and formula. There are stores around the Bay Area which have clothing and toy exchanges and consignment policies as well. If purchasing a used crib or car seat, make sure it meets current safety standards.

    Essential Equipment

    • Car seat (federally approved)


    • Crib or bassinet/cradle (slats should be no more than 23/8 inches apart.)


    • Crib bumpers (Firmly padded; includes 6 ties to secure to crib.)


    • Bottles (4 ounce) and nipples (6 - 8 if bottle-feeding)


    • Bottle and nipple brush


    • Large tote or diaper bag. Pack with: Several diapers, receiving blanket, change of clothes, plastic bag for soiled diapers, washcloth or baby wipes


    • Diaper Pail for cloth diapers


    • Plastic lined garbage pail for disposables


    • Nursing bras (2 cotton) (available at Newborn Connections)


    • Changing table or place to change baby
    Optional, But Very Helpful Equipment
    • Infant seat with secure base (in addition to car seat)


    • Nursing/bottle-feeding pillow (such as My Brest Friend)


    • Disposable or 100% cotton bra pads if breastfeeding


    • Stroller


    • Sling or “Snugli” type front pack carrier (such as Baby Bjorn)


    • Rocking chair


    • Vaporizer — cool mist


    • Bath tub


    • Mobiles (Bright contrasting colors; designed so baby can see it from below while lying on his back.)


    • Toys (age appropriate; safety tested)


    • Crib Mirror (plastic, unbreakable)
