What is Pilates?

As a child, German-born Joseph Pilates was weak and frail. He developed his wellness regime to improve his health, physical strength, and stamina. To help overcome his childhood ailments, he began his lifelong health improvement journey. He perfected his exercise technique while in a British interment camp during World War I working with injured war victims. The Pilates exercise system was fine tuned in the 1920s and in 1926 he immigrated to the United States and opened his first fitness studio in New York City. Over the years, Pilates is now embraced worldwide and has developed into an internationally recognized method of exercise, emphasizing flexibility, balance, the core muscle strengthening.

Pilates Rehabilitation Benefits

Pilates can be practiced by a diverse population on a mat or using various apparatuses: the reformer, cadillac, chair, barrel and props.
Pilates can benefit everyone regardless of fitness level.

Pilates address the needs of athletes at all levels, whether a high performing athlete, a weekend warrior, or recovering from an injury. Based on Pilates’ principals developing strong “core” muscle improves posture and spinal alignment, relieving tension and tightness that often contributes to back pain
