Total Knee Replacement - Surgery Basics
Knee replacement surgery is often called total knee replacement or complete knee replacement to differentiate it with a partial knee replacement. In a total knee replacement, of course, one of our San Francisco knee surgeons will replace your knee in its totality. Another term for this is knee arthroplasty.
Knee surgery of any type, including total knee replacement surgery, is indicated when a patient suffers from chronic and debilitating pain. Many patients succumb to such pains in their later years, as the joint ages and/or suffers from conditions such as osteoarthritis or even knee diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis. Still others who end up with a total knee replacement are injured previously in life due to sport's injuries.
Whatever the case, a total knee replacement can be an excellent option for many patients. People living throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, Marin County, San Mateo County and elsewhere are often active people. A total or complete knee replacement can help them to stay active, thereby increasing their well-being and overall health.
One of the newer options is a custom knee replacement. In a custom knee replacement, the surgeon works with you to customize the artificial knee so that it is nearly a 'perfect match' with your body type.
The first step towards finding the best knee surgeon for you, and best knee surgical options, is to request an initial consult. Our goal at CPMC is to recognize that there is no single best knee surgeon or surgery but rather to work with each individual patient to craft a knee surgery plan that will result in the best outcome for that unique patient.
