(Hip, Knee)
Christopher V. Cox, M.D. is a Board certified orthopedic surgeon. He specializes in total joint replacement surgeries, including hip replacement, knee replacement, and complicated revision total joint surgeries.
Dr. Cox received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1982 from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. At Lewis and Clark, he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. He subsequently obtained his M.D. degree and his orthopedic specialty training at the University of California, San Francisco. He then completed a Fellowship in Adult Joint Replacement and Implant Surgery at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Southern California.
Dr. Cox has been in private practice in San Francisco since 1992. He has published numerous articles in the orthopedic literature. In addition to his orthopedic practice, he is involved in numerous community and hospital affairs. He is the Medical Director of the Joint Replacement Center at California Pacific Medical Center; chairs the Quality Assurance Committee for Orthopaedics, and is Vice-Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
He has also served on the board of directors of the Western Orthopedic Association, Northern California Chapter, Leroy Abbott Society and the Patient Assistance Foundation. Dr. Cox is the past-President of the Western Orthopeadic Assoc, Northern California Chapter and has been a member of the Medical and Scientific Committee of the Arthritis Foundation, No. California Chapter.
He is an accomplished cyclist and mountaineer.

Department of Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. Lowenberg is the Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center. He is the former Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California at San Francisco, Mt. Zion campus and Director of the Problem Fracture and Limb Deformity Service. In addition to a busy full-time clinical practice, Dr. Lowenberg currently lectures and publishes both nationally and internationally on the subject of limb salvage and reconstruction. He is the immediate Past President of the Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society of North America. Dr. Lowenberg is Director of the Limb Salvage and Reconstruction Fellowship at Calfornia Pacific. He is also co-director of the Buncke Microsurgical Research Laboratory, where his research continues on perfecting techniques for limb transplantation as well as the clinical treatment of nonunions and osteomyelitis.
Lesley Anderson, M.D.
(Knee, Shoulder)
Dr. Anderson received her B.S. at Penn State and completed her M.D. at Hershey Medical School (Penn State) in 1976. She participated in sports throughout college and remains active in sports by coaching soccer and as well as educating coaches about injury prevention. She developed her interest in treating injuries of the knee and shoulder through her own personal experiences. At UCLA, Dr. Anderson was their first female orthopedic resident. She completed a fellowship in Knee Surgery and Sports Medicine at the Blazina Orthopedic Clinic. Since moving to San Francisco in 1985, Dr. Anderson has specialized in treating only knee and shoulder problems. She has been listed in Castle-Connelly’s “America’s Top Doctors” yearly from 2000-2004. She has been at the forefront in developing biologic resurfacing techniques of the knee for the past 20 years. She volunteered for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1984.
Dr. Anderson is certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America as well as the first woman member of SICOT, a prestigious international organization of Orthopedic Surgeons. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of California Society and Industrial Medicine and Surgery.
John Belzer, M.D.
(Elbow, Knee, Shoulder)
Dr. Belzer earned his Bachelor of Science degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and his M.D. at Yale University. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California San Francisco and a fellowship in sports medicine, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery at the Southern California Orthopaedic Institute.
Dr.Belzer served as an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Assistant Director of Sports Medicine at UCSF. His interest is in arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement surgery of the shoulder, knee and elbow and has presented research on these topics nationally.
Dr.Belzer is an orthopaedic specialist for the Golden State Warriors Basketball Team, member of the clinical facuIty at UCSF and continues teaching UCSF orthopaedic residents at the Veterans Administration Medical Center. He is also on the medical staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
(Hip, Knee)
Dr. Callander specializes in hip and knee replacements with an emphasis in minimally invasive techniques. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and his medical degree from Saint Louis University. He completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of California, Davis and is fellowship trained in adult replacement and arthroscopy surgery at the Hospital For Special Surgery, Cornell University in New York City.
Dr. Callander has extensive clinical training and experience in all aspects of surgical and non-surgical management of arthritis of the hip and knee. His clinical interests include primary and complex total joint reconstruction, and minimally invasive techniques for total hip and knee replacements.
He has numerous publications and has made presentations on his area of specialty both regionally and nationally at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is active in clinical research with both implant designs and bearing surfaces. Dr. Callander currently serves as an orthopaedic consultant for the San Francisco Ballet.

Dr. Gilbert specializes in total joint replacement and the treatment of arthritis, with particular expertise in total knee and total hip replacements. A graduate of Ohio State Medical School, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at UCSF and also completed special training in the UCSF system in arthritis and rheumatic disease. He is a Clinical Professor at UCSF Medical Center and has been in private practice since 1972. He has cared for patients in the Shriners Hospital system, treating mostly congenital pediatric orthopedic deformities and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Dr. Gilbert is most widely known for his expertise in joint replacement surgery as well as treatment of congenital joint anomalies. He is past president of the Western Orthopaedic Association, has lectured extensively on hip and knee disorders with his work being published in journals such as Arthritis and Rheumatism and Orthopaedics.
He specializes in minimally invasive techniques for hip and knee replacements, to ensure a short hospital stay and rapid return to sports and functional activities. He utilizes modern ceramic and metal bearing surfaces in his total joint replacement procedures.
An avid skier, Dr. Gilbert has been a volunteer with the National Ski Patrol since 1982 and is currently a volunteer physician with the Ski Patrol at Alpine Meadows.
He is married with two children and enjoys cycling, hiking, horseback riding, golf, fly-fishing and SCUBA diving.
Dr. Kelly is an orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in shoulder and elbow surgery. He performs surgery such as arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, shoulder arthroplasty or replacements, and fixation of fractures of the shoulder and elbow.
Dr. Kelly attended college at the University of Rochester, studying chemical engineering and completed his medical degree at Vanderbilt University in 1989. After completing an internship in general surgery at Oakland Naval Hospital, he completed his flight surgery training in the United States Navy and served as a flight surgeon for two United States Marine Corps
Squadrons.
He completed his residency at the University of Missouri, Kansas City in 1999 and completed a fellowship in upper extremity surgery with Tom R. Norris, M.D. and H. Relton McCarroll, M.D. in 2000.
His private practice trains two orthopedic surgeons in surgery of the upper extremity per year. While he has a practice comprehensive in shoulder and elbow, including arthroscopy, rotator cuff disorders and sports, his research interest is focused on the reverse total shoulder replacement.
Dr. Kelly is currently the secretary of the Northern California Chapter of the Western Orthopedic Association and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, California Orthopedic Association, California Medical Association, San Francisco Medical Society, and the Western Orthopedic Association.
He is married with two sons. His hobbies are road cycling, skiing, windsurfing, and mountain biking. He is also a commercially rated multi-engine instrument pilot.
Kevin Louie, M.D. (Knee)
Dr. Louie completed his undergraduate education, Phi Beta Kappa, at Tufts University. He attended medical school at University of Michigan, receiving his M.D. in 1980. Dr. Louie completed his surgery internship, orthopaedic surgery residency and a fellowship in tramua/orthopaedics at the University of California San Francisco.
He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Medical Association, as well as the Western Orthopaedic Association where he has served as a member of the Board of Directors, First Vice President and President. In addition to being an active member of the staff at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Louie is an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSF.
Gordon Lundy, M.D. (Knee)
Tom R. Norris, M.D. (Shoulder)
A native Texan, Dr. Norris attended college at Princeton University, Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons for medical school. He completed his internship at San Francisco General Hospital and did his reseidency at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital for residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. In addition, he completed a one-year fellowship in hand surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and 6 months of microvascular surgery in California. His internship at San Francisco General inspired him to return to the bay area for practice. This was followed by an additional fellowship in the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery with Charles S. Neer II, MD, the pioneer of the specialty.
Certified through the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Norris is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery (AAOS), the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), and a founding member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES). He is a past president of the ASES and is presently on the Board of Trustees for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (JSES).
In addition to his practice, Dr. Norris has served on the Committee for Musculoskeletal Specialities and the Publications Committee the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS). He edited the first and second editions of the Orthopaedic Knowledge Update for the Shoulder and Elbow.
He has had the privilege of being the presidential guest speaker for the European Shoulder and Elbow Society (SECEC), as well as the societies in Germany, South Africa, Japan and New Zealand.
Dr. Norris has published numerous books, articles, instructional courses and videos in peer-reviewed journals and has served as editor for several of them as well.
His area of practice and research focus is in shoulder arthroplasty, including U.S. contributions for the evolving design of the reverse total shoulder replacement. With the anatomic and reverse shoulder arthroplasty, many more options are now available for the treatment of primary arthritis, instability, trauma and the rotator cuff-deficient shoulder as well as their revisions.
Dr. Norris' personal interests include family and attempts at improving his tennis, hiking and flyfishing.
