Dr. Gilbert specializes in total joint replacement and the treatment of arthritis, with particular expertise in total knee and total hip replacements. A graduate of Ohio State Medical School, he completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at UCSF and also completed special training in the UCSF system in arthritis and rheumatic disease. He is a Clinical Professor at UCSF Medical Center and has been in private practice since 1972. He has cared for patients in the Shriners Hospital system, treating mostly congenital pediatric orthopedic deformities and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis patients.
Dr. Gilbert is most widely known for his expertise in joint replacement surgery as well as treatment of congenital joint anomalies. He is past president of the Western Orthopaedic Association, has lectured extensively on hip and knee disorders with his work being published in journals such as Arthritis and Rheumatism and Orthopaedics.
He specializes in minimally invasive techniques for hip and knee replacements, to ensure a short hospital stay and rapid return to sports and functional activities. He utilizes modern ceramic and metal bearing surfaces in his total joint replacement procedures.
An avid skier, Dr. Gilbert has been a volunteer with the National Ski Patrol since 1982 and is currently a volunteer physician with the Ski Patrol at Alpine Meadows.
He is married with two children and enjoys cycling, hiking, horseback riding, golf, fly-fishing and SCUBA diving.
