Planning Your Pregnancy - A Checklist
The following checklist provides a helpful reminder of important steps to complete during your pregnancy. These steps are intended as general guidelines only; consult with your health care provider regarding specific questions you have.
- First Trimester (0-3 months of pregnancy)
- Second Trimester (3-6 months of pregnancy)
- Third Trimester (6-9 months of pregnancy)
- After Your Baby Arrives
First Trimester (0-3 months of pregnancy)
- Schedule prenatal screening tests (ask about the new cystic fibrosis and integrated screening tests).
- Visit Newborn Connections' maternity, breastfeeding and baby specialty boutique; browse the book and video library.
Second Trimester (3-6 months of pregnancy)
- Enroll early for classes to be taken in the 3rd trimester. Classes should be completed four weeks prior to your due date. We highly recommend the Preparing for Your First Baby classes: Childbirth Preparation, Breastfeeding and Newborn Parenting.
- Schedule second trimester screenings, including Expanded Alpha Feto-Protein (EAFP) blood test and the glucose screening test for gestational diabetes.
- Complete and mail the hospital pre-registration form obtained from your health care provider or complete the form online.
- Parents of multiples enroll in the Preparing for Twins, Triplets & More, Breastfeeding and Multiples and Understanding Pre-Term Labor classes.
- Review your health care coverage. Anesthesia is billed separately. The fee varies depending on the length of time anesthesia is required. If you still have questions after consulting with your insurance provider, contact a financial counselor at California Pacific. If your last name begins with:

Third Trimester (6-9 months of pregnancy)
- Discuss any third trimester blood tests, blood transfusion options and cord blood banking with your health care provider.
- Choose a pediatric health care provider before you give birth to your baby. See our physician locator to find a pediatrician near you.
- Make reservations to attend a tour of the Women and Children's Center by calling (415) 600-BABY.
- Visit Newborn Connections to be fitted for a nursing bra with one of our certified bra fitters. We recommend bra fittings any time after 37 weeks of pregnancy.
If this is your first baby...
• Attend the Childbirth Preparation, Breastfeeding and Newborn Parenting classes. (Enroll early during your second trimester. Call (415) 600-BABY to request a class packet and registration form by mail).
If you have had a child previously...
• Consider attending our Childbirth Refresher or Big Brother, Big Sister Sibling Celebration classes. Back to topAfter Your Baby Arrives
- Attend our support groups and workshops for new parents, including our Breastfeeding Mothers Group, New Parents Group and Postpartum Adjustment Support Group.
- Visit Newborn Connection's Lending Library for books and videos on baby care, breastfeeding and infant safety.
