Art & Healing: Four Nights of Performance & Lectures
The Health & Healing Center announces its 10th annual Mini Medical School, a free public lecture series. The 2007 series will bring you the healing arts in many forms – visual, movement, music, humor, storytelling and more – to inspire you about the transformational power of art. This unique community education program is made possible through the generous support of Mrs. Newton H. Neustadter, Jr.
Mini Medical School will be held on Wednesday April 11, 18, 25 & May 2, 2007 from 6:30-8:30pm at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in San Francisco. There is no charge for the lectures though pre-registration is required and space is limited. Please register online or leave a message at (415) 600-2120. Parking is available for a fee at both the JCC and the UCSF Laurel Heights campus. CEUs are available.

The Art of Healing
with William B. Stewart, MD
As co-founder and medical director of the Institute for Health & Healing at California Pacific Medical Center, Dr. Stewart has worked to change the way we understand health and healing. Dr. Stewart’s recent book, Deep Medicine, acknowledges the importance of art and creativity to the healing process and healthy living.
Poetic Medicine for the Heart & Soul
with John Fox, CPT
Poetry is natural medicine. As a certified poetry therapist, John Fox uses it as his preferred mode of healing. Poems distill experience into essentials and touch the common ground we share with others. Poetic medicine can help integrate disparate or even fragmented parts of our lives. Sound, metaphor, image, feeling and rhythm act as remedies that strengthen our whole system—physical, mental and spiritual. A partial screening of "Healing Words," a documentary on the arts in medicine at the University of Florida's Shands Hospital, will be shown. John is the author of Poetic Medicine: The Healing Art of Poem-Making.

The Healing Power of Rhythm & Sound
with Kokomon & Aeeshah Clottey
Kokomon is an interpreter of the indigenous African Ga-Adagme tribe’s wisdom, and Aeeshah is a community leader, social activist and facilitator. Together, they created “mindful drumming” which pairs the twin concepts of sound and rhythm in a unique way that helps us manage stress and emotional challenges, deepen communication, and promote healing connection to the heart. Kokomon and Aeeshah are the founders of the Attitudinal Healing Connection in Oakland, CA, whose mission is to eliminate violence and fear. They are the authors of Beyond Fear: Twelve Spiritual Steps to Racial Healing and Mindful Drumming.

Transforming Space with Visual Artistry
with Shelley Masters
As a muralist and artist, Shelley Masters combines artistic talent with an innate spiritual sensitivity to create sacred space. She is an alchemist with a paint brush who has transformed over 500 Bay Area homes, restaurants, hospital chapels and hospice rooms into timeless, beautiful art. Shelley also created the murals in the Health & Healing Library and California Pacific Medical Center’s chapel. An expert in her field, Shelley will share her experience creating healing spaces and “meaningful beauty.”
Movement & the Creative Expression of Sound
with Astrid Thiersch
An international educator, San Francisco Waldorf High School teacher, and Director of the San Francisco Youth Eurythmy Troupe, Astrid Thiersch is an expert on Eurythmy, a unique movement art. Eurythmy is a colorful system of movement and sound developed by Rudolf Steiner. The deeply healing aspect of this engaging dance is Curative Eurythmy, used to strengthen and harmonize areas of the body where there may be illness or imbalance. Astrid received her BFA from the Eurythmeum Stuttgart in 1982, and has performed and taught worldwide.

Storytelling to Lift the Spirit
with Terri Tate, RN, MS
Terri Tate is a nationally renowned storyteller, humorist and nurse. In 1991, Terri was silenced by oral cancer. Doctor’s said she had a 2% chance of surviving the disease. Not only has she survived the disfiguring cancer and numerous bouts of reconstructive surgery, she has reclaimed her voice. With honed storytelling skills and brimming with passion to inspire others, Terri’s performance offers profound wisdom and wit. Terri’s enthusiasm for storytelling is infectious and has been an essential ingredient in her healing.
Empowerment through the Creative Arts
with Sarah Crowell
Sarah Crowell is the Executive Director and Co-Artistic Director of The Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company based in Oakland, CA. For over fifteen years she has empowered youth through dance, theater, violence-prevention and leadership classes in Bay Area schools. She teaches meditation, dance, choreography and theater, with a strong emphasis on self expression and exploration to encourage people to find their voice. Sarah is the author of Youth on the Move: A Teacher’s Guidebook to Co-Creating Original Movement/Theater Performances with Teens.
