Laury Rappaport, PhD, MFT, ATR-BC, REAT
Laury Rappaport, PhD, MFT, ATR-BC, REAT is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Expressive Arts Therapist. As a pioneer and leader in the field of mind-body medicine for over 30 years, she developed a new therapeutic practice called Focusing-Oriented Arts Therapy, internationally recognized as an effective method for reducing stress as well as cultivating self-compassion, self-care, inner trust, and authenticity. Laury is approachable and dynamic, combining clinical expertise with a vibrant, compassionate presence.
Laury works with people of all ages to explore and transform feelings related to an illness, challenges to relationships or self-esteem, changes in life, or limiting beliefs and behaviors. Laury also teaches skills to apply in your daily life that can help to restore greater mind, body, emotion, and spirit balance. She creates safe, trusting relationships with patients, fostering positive changes in relation to health and well-being.
Laury is artful at listening to patient concerns and tailoring an approach most attuned to each person’s unique needs. Her specialties include:
- expressive arts and guided imagery - using healing imagery to gain insight into one’s life, health, and illness
- mindfulness meditation - to reduce stress and enhance well-being
- focusing - a gentle “inward listening” to access the body’s wisdom and learn how to take steps towards wellness
As the founder/director of the Focusing and Expressive Arts Institute, Laury also designed the mind-body medicine department at Five Branches University in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and has been on the faculty of five graduate counseling/art therapy training programs. She is the author of Focusing-Oriented Art Therapy: Accessing the Body’s Wisdom and Creative Intelligence, creator of the CD, Focusing for Wellbeing, editor of the forthcoming book, Mindfulness and the Arts Therapies, and is frequently published by scholarly publications. Laury has made more than 75 professional presentations worldwide, in the United States, Canada, Japan and Hong Kong.
