In addition to our public and professional continuing education, we also offer fellowship and internship opportunities.
The Fellowship in Clinical Ethics
Fellowships in Clinical Ethics are offered by the Program for one year in residence and will constitute a forty hour week. The purpose of the Fellowship is to convey the knowledge and skills of clinical ethics consultation and how an ethics committee functions in a busy community hospital. This Fellowship does not provide a stipend. Tuition for the Fellowship is $5,000. Scholarships are available (No additional application necessary).
Applicants for a Fellowship must have an advanced degree in a field relevant to bioethics, that is, an MA or a PhD in philosophy or a social science or nursing, an MD or a JD. Some preparatory work in bioethics is desirable. Fellows will engage in the work of clinical consultation and ethics committee functions under expert supervision. They will also participate in a tutorial on the fundamentals of clinical ethics. They will be expected to complete an independent research project and/or a paper of publishable quality. Fellows will be supervised by a committee of mentors; Dr. Albert Jonsen, Senior Scholar in Ethics; Dr. William Andereck, chair of the CPMC Ethics Committee; Dr. Thomasine Kushner, co-editor of The Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics, and Dr. Katrina Bramstedt, CPMC Clinical Ethicist.
The curriculum is based on the Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities. A certificate of completion will be provided to those Fellows who demonstrate their achievement of those skills.
