Center for Melanoma Research and Treatment
Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. Most skin cancers are basal cell or squamous cell cancers. These non-melanoma skin cancers do not spread easily, are less threatening and are seldom fatal. Melanoma accounts for about 5% of all diagnosed skin cancers and is far more serious. If detected early, melanoma can almost always be cured, but when melanoma is not detected early it is much more likely to spread and can be fatal.
The best defense against developing melanoma or skin cancer is prevention and early detection. CPMC is one of the best melanoma treatment centers, located in San Francisco, CA. We serve not only San Francisco but the entire San Francisco Bay Area including Marin County and Northern California.

Mohammed Kashani-Sabet, M.D., the Center’s Medical Director, is a renowned dermatologist who has been treating melanoma and cutaneous lymphomas for over 15 years. Dedicated surgeons specializing in selective sentinel lymph node dissections, immunotherapy, head and neck cancers, and reconstructive surgery meet the needs of each individual.
Medical oncologists provide leading-edge biochemotherapy for patients with stage IV melanoma and standard chemotherapy for earlier stage cancer. On-staff dermatopathologists examine tissue samples from each biopsy to confirm cancer and determine type and severity. The radiation oncologists work collaboratively with the melanoma team to ensure each patient receives the very best care.
Teamwork is key to successful treatment; therefore the melanoma tumor board meets weekly to discuss patient cases and identity the optimal treatment plan.
