Why Choose Us?
More About Us
California Pacific is one of the premier patient care, education and research centers on the West Coast. We are the largest private, not-for-profit medical center in Northern California and the second largest in the state. We are a member of Sutter Health which is a not-for-profit entity that serves approximately one-third of all Northern California patients through its network of approximately thirty hospitals and seven medical groups.
California Pacific is a facility licensed for over 1250-bed facility and is housed on three campuses. The Pacific Campus features acute care for adults and children. The California Campus is devoted to ambulatory care, skilled nursing and obstetrics. The Davies Campus is a general hospital with special services in psychiatry, rehabilitation and microsurgery. These three campuses are connected by shuttle buses which run at regular intervals.
A Tradition of Excellence
California Pacific maintains a strong patient care and teaching tradition that dates back to the late 1800's.
The California Campus, located in San Francisco's Presidio Heights district, was founded by two women physicians in 1875 as the Pacific Dispensary for Women and Children. In 1885, the name changed to Children's Hospital and housed the first nursing school west of the Rockies. Over time, Children's Hospital of San Francisco expanded its activities and became a general acute care hospital for men, women and children.
The Pacific Campus, located in the Pacific Heights district, originated in 1882 as Cooper Medical College. Between 1908 and 1959 it was the Stanford University Hospital. When the university moved to Palo Alto in 1959, many of its medical staff remained to establish what would become Pacific Presbyterian Medical Center.
California Pacific was created in 1991 by the merger of Children's Hospital and Pacific Presbyterian. The Davies Campus was purchased in August 1998.
Today and Into the Future
California Pacific serves our community, caring for a larger percentage of San Francisco's population than any other institution. We are particularly proud of our HMO-oriented outpatient teaching clinics. In addition, California Pacific has nationally recognized expertise in subspecialties and tertiary care. Quality, customer service and continuous improvement are our guiding principles.
To address the market conditions dictated by the managed care environment of San Francisco, California Pacific has implemented a strategic plan that has transformed and improved patient care while dramatically reducing costs. This strategic plan has included: the formation of an extremely successful physician-hospital organization; improved information systems; a major emphasis on philanthropy as an integral part of providing quality patient care; the elimination of duplicate services at our campuses; a commitment to appropriate use of Practice Guidelines; use of full-time hospitalists as inpatient physician educators; and constant education about selection of cost-efficient tests and therapy.
The clinical configuration of our campuses permits a level of care appropriate to the patient's acuity. Careful consideration is given to whether patients need an ICU, a ward bed, post-acute care (skilled nursing), a rehabilitation facility or home care. All of these services are provided by California Pacific.
The Pacific Campus facilities include: Adult Acute Medical Care Units, all ICUs, 24-Hour Emergency Services, Inpatient Pediatrics, Critical Care, Cancer Treatment, Psychiatry, Inpatient Surgery and Organ Transplantation Programs.
The California Campus includes our Outpatient Clinics, the Center for Outpatient Surgery and the Surgical Recovery Care Center, the Women and Infants Center, Newborn Intensive Care, the Breast Health Center, the Women's Health Resource Center, an Alzheimer's unit and more than 100 Skilled Nursing beds.
The Davies Campus is currently a general acute care hospital with enhancement of services ongoing.
