The residents and faculty at California Pacific Medical Center are actively involved in many clinical and multicenter projects. The CPMC Institutional Review Board (IRB) serves, among other institutions, the California Pacific Medical Center in accordance with the Human Subjects in Research Assurance.

Research is an integral part of this residency training program. Second and third year residents are required to actively participate in some area of investigation of their own choosing, in conjunction with members of the department or The Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute.

The Pacific Vision Foundation also supports educational and research activities within the department. Research results are presented at the Barkan Annual Scientific Meeting held each spring, and residents are sponsored to present papers and projects at national meetings.

Recently, residents have presented research findings at the meetings of the American Acadmy of Ophthalmology (AA0), Association For Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), the International Congress of Ocular Oncology, the Pacific Coast Oto-Ophthalmologic Society and the International Society of Refractive Surgeons.

Residents have the opportunity to collaborate with skilled and experienced investigators including:

  • Dr. William Good, who is involved with, among other endeavors, recent major trials regarding retinopathy of prematurity (ROP).
  • Dr. Alan Scott, who was a pioneer in Botox research and the first to officially use botox in humans to treat strabismus. Dr. Scott is actively involved in cutting-edge research regarding strabismus therapy.
  • Dr. Anne Fung, who was intimately involved with some of the earliest trials regarding anti-VEGF treatment for exudative age-related macular degeneration and continues to investigate novel treatments for diseases of the retina.
