Internal Medicine

Inpatient Care
Categorical and Preliminary first-year residents have similar rotation schedules. They spend the majority of their time on inpatient services and have primary responsibility for a wide range of patients on general medicine, critical care, cardiology and subspecialty services.

Inpatient teams usually consist of R-1s, an R-2 or R-3, and a teaching attending. A senior medical student may be assigned to the team as an "acting intern." The house staff assumes responsibility for most medical inpatients.

First-year residents on the medical service are on overnight call one night in five ("every fifth"). MICU and Cardiology are Q4 night call while Heme-Onc is approximately Q7. Night floats are used at all levels of training except in the MICU.
