Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program
Call Responsibilities
There are two types of call activities in the fellowship:
(1) At-home call (pager call) in which the fellow should be available to answer questions or inquiries regarding patients on either the pulmonary consult service or in the critical care unit after regular working hours. The frequency of calls is expected to be minimal and the fellow is not expected to come in to the hospital at those times. This type of call occurs after regular hours on during the week on any pulmonary consult and critical care unit rotations.
(2) In-house call in which the fellow spends extended time at the designated institution. While on the critical care rotations at CPMC, the fellow is expected to take “short-call” every Monday evening until 10:00pm. There is no overnight call in the fellowship. While the fellows are rotating at CPMC, they will also be expected to be on call one weekend every month regardless of the rotation they are participating in that month. They will be asked to choose the specific weekends that they will take call ahead of time and the call schedule will be published. Fellows will be responsible to help with management of the patients on both the pulmonary consult service as well as the ICU Blue Team.
On the Friday of the their weekend call, the fellows will actively participate in the evening ICU rounds (4:00pm). This will allow them to become fully familiar with the patients in the ICU prior to the weekend. After the rounds are completed, the fellow will discuss with the weekend on-call attending the consult patients that they are expected to see.
Fellows will be expected to arrive on the weekend at approximately 7:00 am. At 8:00 am the fellow will be expected to run the rounds along with the supervising attending physician. After completing the ICU rounds the on-call attending and fellow will then round together on the consult patients on the floor.
While rotating at ACMC the call responsibilities will be varied. While on the ICU rotation, fellows are expected to take short call for two days per week in which they stay until approximately 10:00pm to help with management and evaluation of new admissions to the ICU. While on the pulmonary consult rotation, the fellow will be expected to be on call one weekend per month to help manage the patients on the pulmonary consult service.
