Resident Spotlights

Nicole Hickey, M.D., R1, Categorical – Internal Medicine, Temple University School of Medicine

I had the opportunity to do an away elective here at CPMC during my 4th year of medical school. It was then that I realized that CPMC is where I wanted to be for residency. At CPMC I found a community that strives to deliver excellent patient care to a diverse patient population. CPMC has a strong emphasis on teaching clinical and evidence-based medicine. There are ample opportunities to participate in research, and to present at regional conferences. At CPMC there is a strong camaraderie between residents, attendings, and ancillary staff. The program is very open to resident feedback, and changes in the curriculum occur readily. Also, CPMC is located in the beautiful and sunny-side of San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, near a wide variety of coffee shops and restaurants, which makes for a nice break from the hospital. I am very happy to be doing my residency here at CPMC and can’t imagine doing residency anywhere else.

Each day I am reminded that I made the right choice in deciding to spend my internship year at CPMC. Everyone in the hospital community helps to make this a wonderful place to work and learn, from the friendly support staff who hold the elevator doors open with a smile, to the enthusiastic and approachable attending physicians who love to impart their clinical knowledge. As an academic community hospital located in the heart of San Francisco, CPMC attracts a wonderfully diverse patient population. I have been privileged to take care of patients presenting with common illnesses as well as those traveling hundreds of miles to seek out the expertise of CPMC’s specialists. Add all of this to the opportunity to spend a post-call afternoon biking in the Marin Headlands, and I believe you have the perfect residency program.

Andrew Cummins, M.D., R2, Categorical – Internal Medicine, University of Vermont

The decision to come to CPMC was an easy one for me, especially after doing a rotation here as a fourth year. CPMC and San Francisco both have so much to offer. CPMC is a great mix of community and academic medicine programs, with an incredibly diverse patient population. What drew me here however, was the community. Everyone in the hospital is so friendly. I feel this really helps foster a great learning environment. The transition into Internship was much easier because of this. The entire medical staff here is not only very knowledgeable but also friendly, approachable and fun. Another big factor in choosing a residency for me was location and I have found the Bay area even better than I expected. There is so much to do here right out your front door. Knowing that when you have some free time - there will always be something to do and the weather will probably be nice really makes a difference. With all the choices of medicine programs in California, I am really happy I ended up here.

Maggie So, M.D., R2, Categorical - Internal Medicine, New York Medical College

After doing a 4th year sub-internship, I realized that CPMC was definitely the place for me. What stood out was how happy all the house staff were. It's such a friendly atmosphere, and the program really emphasizes your learning and training. Even though residency is supposed to be a tough time, it has been fun and the time has just flown by. You make great friends at CPMC, and there's a real sense of camaraderie. The staff and nurses at CPMC are phenomenal, and you really couldn't ask for a more supportive environment. You also get to take advantage of doing all the great things in the Bay Area on those precious days off!

Julie Chen, M.D., R3, Categorical – Internal Medicine, University of Rochester

During the long interview process for residency programs, my interview experience at CPMC stood out in my mind because all of the residents had glowing comments regarding the program and the faculty appeared enthusiastic about teaching. Now that I am doing my residency here at CPMC, I have become one of those happy residents and the faculty are indeed enthusiastic about teaching. The balance between a rigorous curriculum and a fun experience is difficult to achieve. However, I feel that CPMC’s program has created an environment where my education in internal medicine and its subspecialties are both rigorous and fun.

Carie Chin-Garcia, M.D., R3, Categorical – Internal Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University

The prospect of residency can be both daunting and exciting at the same time. Excellent location, strength of teaching/training, opportunities for fellowships, and the “feel” of a program are just some of the factors that can influence your rank list. For me, CPMC is everything I could ask for in a residency program and more. When I came to interview, I was also amazed at how happy residents were during such a challenging part of their training. Granted, the residents were tired from working so hard, but three different residents said that what they loved most about CPMC is that it brought back their love for medicine and that it made them even more passionate about medicine. Since I was an intern, I’ve found enthusiasm for not only the residency program, but the hospital in general- people are very happy to work here which definitely translates into a great work environment. Furthermore, I’ve learned that the program is incredibly supportive of residents whether they are planning for a competitive fellowship or if they are going through a rough time. I am thrilled with being here at CPMC and look forward for everything to come!
