Advance Health Care Directives Clinic

Get answers to your questions regarding this important part of planning your end-of-life care arrangements. This small group clinic is led by a social worker. You will be able to complete an advance directive form if you are prepared to do so. Class size limited to 6 persons

Childbirth Preparation

October 2009-December 2010

Classes draw upon a variety of techniques including Lamaze, Bradley, Read and Simkin. A certified childbirth instructor prepares expectant mothers and their partners for birth. The series includes instruction in relaxation and breathing to reduce the discomfort of labor, alternative labor and birth positions, massage, the partner's role, hospital and possible medical procedures, medicated and non-medicated labor, anesthesia and cesarean birth. Select a series that will end approximately 4 to 6 weeks before your due date.

Regular exercise is beneficial at any age, but as we grow older exercise helps minimize the aging process. This class focused on cardio, strengthening, balance, and flexibility exercises is taught under the guidance and safety of physicial therapy professionals.

A class designed especially for fathers-to-be. Topics and group discussions include helping your partner through pregnancy and childbirth, caring for a new baby, balancing work and parenting and maintaining a healthy relationship.

Gentle Yoga for Cancer Patients

This class combines group support, gentle yoga postures, breathing practices, guided imagery, and yoga philosophy to relieve stress and encourage healing of the body, mind, and heart.

Glaucoma Education

Sometimes called the silent thief of sight, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness. A CPMC ophthalmologist who specializes in glaucoma will instruct participants on the risk factors, prevention strategies, symptoms, examination necessary for proper diagnosis, and state-of-the-art treatment options.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction

Prenatal Yoga

October 2009-November 2010

Prenatal yoga is both energizing and gentle. Classes are designed to help pregnant women connect with their developing baby, to increase comfort and fluidity in their rapidly changing body, and to alleviate common discomforts of pregnancy such as back pain, sciatica, swelling, anxiety and fatigue. Prenatal yoga classes complement birth education courses in assisting women in preparing for and meeting the physical and emotional demands of childbirth and motherhood. Each 90-minute class includes: meditation and visualization, breath practice, discussion and yoga poses. Combined, these elements safely stretch and strengthen the body and mind in preparation for labor and birth. Each class is tailored to meet the unique needs of all participants. The class is open to pregnant women with a doctor's written approval.

Rejuvenating Yoga

Tai Chi Chuan

For thousands of years, the Chinese have practiced T’ai Chi, an ancient Chinese movement therapy. T’ai Chi is a meditative form of exercise, utilizing deep, regular breathing in sequences of slow, graceful movements to help increase energy, calm the mind and promote self-healing. It also improves balance, muscle control and concentration. Chris Lynch is an accomplished practitioner and an inspiring teacher with nearly 20 years of T'ai Chi experience. Originally developed in China as a martial art, the original Yang long form of T'ai Chi enhances the flow of vital energy through a series of slow movements, controlled breathing and a focused mind. T'ai Chi enhances blood circulation, reduces stress, and improves physical conditioning and mental clarity.

Total Hip Replacement - Pre-Operative Patient Education Program

August 2009-August 2010

This pre-operative program provides patients with information about hip surgery. Topics include anatomy of the hip joint, prosthesis equipment required after surgery, self-care management, using a walker, pre-operative exercises, modifications in the home, preparing for surgery, length of stay in the hospital, pain management and preventing hip dislocation. Patients and their family and friends are encouraged to attend.

Yoga - Continuing your Practice

This ongoing continuing class is designed for students who have completed a series with Kathryn, or who have previous yoga and meditation experience and wish to continue to evolve their personal practice within a structured and supportive environment. The class focuses on more advanced assanas, breath work and balance.

Developed exclusively for people over 59 years of age, these gentle classes focus on helping participants increase range of motion, improve posture, restore flexibility and increase breath capacity. Chair and standing yoga poses for people with limited movement or who have difficulty with floor exercises. This class focuses on ease of movement, gentle strengthening and balance, and relaxation tools.

Developed exclusively for people over 59 years of age, these classes focus on increasing range of motion, improving posture, restoring flexibility and increasing breath capacity. This restorative and healing yoga class includes slow, gentle standing and floor stretches with meditation and guided imagery. It is beneficial for those suffering from chronic pain.

Developed exclusively for people over 59 years of age, these gentle classes focus on helping participants increase range of motion, improve posture, restore flexibility and increase breath capacity. This class incorporates a series of floor and standing yoga poses focused on strength and flexibility. Teacher approval is required.

The Breast Cancer Recovery Program assists women undergoing treatment for breast cancer. This includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy and/or hormonal therapy. The Breast Health Center offers a private and comprehensive consultation with our Breast Health Nurse Specialist. A clinical exam and work-up is offered for women with breast complaints. Social worker is assigned to California Pacific Medical Center's Radiation Oncology to provide short term counseling for patients undergoing radiation therapy. Services are also available to all patients with cancer. Assistance and support are provided in the areas of employment, transportation, in-home care, coping, caregiver stress, etc. Referrals to various community and hospital services are provided. No charge to patient for consultation during radiation therapy or breast cancer treatment. Fees for follow-up counseling based upon sliding scale.

A weekly breast cancer support group, facilitated by a nurse and psychologist, is open to women who are newly diagnosed, undergoing treatment, and post-treatment.

If you provide emotional, practical, or spiritual care for a loved one, you may need support. No matter what your specific situation, caregiving can be a lonely and demanding role. Meet with other caregivers in a confidential group led by a clinical social worker.

Support people and caregivers welcome. Each monthly meeting includes a lymphedema educational seminar and a 20 minute gentle exercise class. Please wear loose and comfortable clothing.

Metastatic Breast Cancer Educational Support Group

Monthly educational support group open to all women dealing with metastatic breast cancer. Each meeting includes a presentation given by an invited speaker on relevant topics, such as disability insurance, stress reduction techniques, clinical trials, and more. You also have the opportunity to talk and gain support from other women.

Repetitive Strain Injury Support Group (RSI)

The San Francisco Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) Support Group is a peer-led group which meets monthly. Most meetings include a guest speaker on specific therapies, ergonomic tools, legal and benefits issues, etc. Every meeting also includes time for open discussion and mutual support. Meetings are held from 7:00-9:00 pm, on first Mondays, except holidays and religious observances. Stroke Survivor Support Group

This group is designed to aid the recovery of stroke survivors by providing a safe and supportive atmosphere where individuals are able to share their experiences. Those at any stage of recovery are invited to attend. This group is made possible by the philanthropic funds of Home Instead Senior Care San Francisco.

Support Group for Women with Gynecological Cancer

January-December 2009

Women with uterine, ovarian, cervical, vaginal, peritoneal, and/or vulvar cancer have the opportunity to talk with and gain support from other women who share similar experiences. Facilitated by an advanced practice nurse and social worker. An initial assessment is necessary before joining the group.
