Center for Patient and Community Education

The Center for Patient and Community Education collaborates with California Pacific physicians, nurses, and staff to create a wealth of learning resources to educate patients, their families, and our community. Research has shown that patients and families who participate in successful patient education programs have (1) improved clinical outcomes; (2) are more compliant with their treatment plan; and (3) have less anxiety and are more satisfied with their care. Effective patient education results in lower hospital readmission rates, and ultimately reduced costs to health care organizations.

In 2000, we developed the Center (originally known as California Pacific Health Education Initiative) for two reasons:

  • To live our belief that an informed patient is an essential component in high-quality health care.

  • To respond to our patients' requests to learn about their care and what to expect at California Pacific Medical Center.
Our goal in meeting the needs of our patients is to expand and improve education across different medical settings. One way to meet this goal is to provide accurate medical information through Learning About Your Health on the web. Patients can easily access a wide variety of health topics at any time, anywhere, and in several languages (Chinese, Spanish, and Russian). We also provide medical information through handouts distributed in physician offices and throughout the hospital.

Please visit Learning About Your Health often, as we continually add new medical information to our site.

California Pacific Award for Excellence in Patient Education

The California Pacific Award for Excellence in Patient Education was created:

  • To affirm and communicate our belief in the importance of an informed patient in high-quality health care;

  • To foster awareness of and facilitate the sharing of excellent, innovative education materials, processes, and activities developed for patients and their families by our health care colleagues; and

  • To celebrate and communicate excellence in patient education.
In 2004, eighty-three acute-care medical centers from across the United States contributed outstanding patient education projects in application for the Award.
