There are two types of diabetes, type 1 and type 2. With both types of diabetes, the outcome is the same your blood sugar is elevated. With type 1diabetes, your pancreas no longer makes insulin and so you must give yourself insulin injections (shots) to live. With type 2 diabetes, your pancreas can make some insulin, however your body may not use it effectively. Although there is no cure for diabetes, management of this condition requires that you take special care of yourself by keeping your blood sugar in a safe range. With the support of the health care team, family, friends, and caregivers, you will learn how to manage diabetes and stay healthy.
If you child has diabetes, the Pediatric Diabetes Center at California Pacific Medical Center, provides family guidance to parents of children with diabetes, guiding them toward successful home management and independence.
