Sentinel lymph node biopsy.
This intraoperative test is sometimes used to provide information regarding the first lymph node in the chain of nodes that drains the breast in the axilla (armpit area). Your Breast Surgeon will make the decision whether this test is appropriate for you and will arrange for the Pathologist to look at the results during surgery. Based on these results, additional lymph nodes may be sampled from the axilla at the time of surgery.
If your lymph node sampling does not involved sentinel node analysis, your final pathology results will be available aruond five days after surgery. Your Breast Surgeon will discuss the results and will explain them to you in detail.
