In Memory of William R. Payden, 1935 - 2013
A generous and enthusiastic philanthropic partner of CPMC’s Center for Melanoma Research and Treatment, William R. Payden passed away on June 5, 2013 at his home in Santa Monica, California.
Bill lead a life filled with a wide variety of interests which included music, cinema, sports, aviation and philanthropy. During his career he worked as a journalist, public relations officer (including becoming the first ever civilian public relations coordinator for the Los Angeles Police Department) and as a college journalism professor. He was an accomplished pianist and recorded three CDs. In addition, he was an avid collector and his home was a virtual museum filled with sports and aviation memorabilia, as well as an extensive film library.
Several years ago when Bill learned he had melanoma, he researched the best places for treatment and though he lived in Southern California, he chose CPMC. He especially liked the fact that the physicians treating him were also involved in clinical research exploring new ways to fight the disease.
Together with his sister Joan, the Payden’s generosity both individually and through the Mary R. and Joseph R. Payden Foundation has benefitted the fields of health care, education and vocational programs. We were proud to count Bill among our friends and will miss him greatly.
