John N. Callander, M.D.
1923 – 2013
Longtime CPMC physician and CPMC Foundation Trustee Dr. John Callander died on June 9, 2013 at the age of 90. Known by patients and colleagues for his kindness and compassion, Dr. Callander had a long history of being a strong advocate for both the California Pacific Medical Center and CPMC Foundation.
He joined the CPMC Medical Staff in 1955 and in 1972 founded California Pacific Orthopedic and Sports Medicine, which continues on today. Dr. Callander was a respected orthopedic surgeon for more than 60 years and in addition to his work at CPMC, he also cared for patients at the San Francisco Free Clinic and for dancers of the San Francisco Ballet.
Dr. Callander had served on the CPMC Foundation Board of Trustees since 1991, and had been a Vice Chair since 2000. During his tenure at the Foundation, he was recognized many times for his outstanding work in philanthropy, including being the first ever recipient of CPMC Foundation’s Doyle-Jewitt Philanthropic Leadership Award in 2010.
