Diversity and Excellence! That’s how California Pacific Medical Center Foundation regards our over 400 foundation, corporate and vendor donors. Their philanthropic gifts represent 18 percent of the total dollars raised for the Foundation. We sincerely thank all of our outstanding foundation, corporate and vendor contributors.

Here are just a few of these very special organizations whose gifts make a huge impact in our community:

HEDCO Foundation

Supporting CPMC's cancer patients

“Stop and shoot, stop and shoot.” That’s how specialists describe most cancer treatments by a linear accelerator, because the machine has to pause and move between each burst of radiation always from a different angle. Compare this with the RapidArc enhancement: “Zip, zip,” the machine rotates continuously around the patient, completing the treatment in four minutes instead of 20. Only recently did CPMC acquire state-of-the-art RapidArc technology, thanks in part to major funding from the HEDCO Foundation.

In 2003, the HEDCO Foundation provided a generous grant for the purchase of a linear accelerator. And in 2010, it teamed up with CPMC Foundation once again to help raise the $434,000 in funding needed to enhance this equipment with RapidArc technology. The HEDCO Foundation issued this challenge: every dollar raised for the enhancement will be matched, up to $150,000. Our donor community answered that call and by 2011,we raised the full amount needed for RapidArc. Now CPMC's Radiation Oncology patients can take comfort in knowing that they are receiving radiotherapy that is delivered as quickly and safely as possible.

Avon Foundation

Ensuring breast health for all women

CPMC’s St. Luke’s CampusOpens new window is the medical hub for many low-income, uninsured women who live in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhoods. Patients at the St. Luke’s Breast Health CenterOpens new window are predominantly Latina, a population group more likely to be diagnosed with late stage breast cancer and to suffer higher mortality rates as compared to Caucasian women.

To address this health disparity and to make available to the St. Luke’s community breast health services that not only meet, but exceed the standard of care, CPMC began a partnership in 2011 with the Avon Foundation to provide culturally appropriate patient navigation services to aid women through the journey from screening to treatment and ultimately recovery. St. Luke’s Breast Health Center now has a dedicated Patient Navigator to recruit medically underserved women, provide access for first time screenings, and increase the number of patients who have repeat/annual mammograms. Due to the Avon Foundation’s significant grant, we are addressing the barriers for many women to access timely care that may mean the difference between life and death.

Tipping Point Community

Helping kids stay healthy

Although Bayview Hunters Point has the largest concentration of children than any other San Francisco neighborhood, this community only had 1.2 pediatricians until CPMC opened the Bayview Child Health CenterOpens new window in 2007. A CPMC satellite pediatric clinic that serves as the medical home for hundreds of families, the Center is able to continue its work toward reducing health disparities due to the generosity of philanthropic partners like Tipping Point Community.

Since the clinic’s inception, Tipping Point Community’s major grants, along with contributions from many other generous supporters, has enabled the Center to provide high quality, accessible and culturally competent health and wellness services, including well-baby and well-child check ups, immunizations, mental health, asthma management, health plan enrollment assistance, nutrition counseling, and case management services. The Center has had an immediate impact on its patients’ health; immunization and asthma hospitalization rates for Bayview Child Health Center patients are significantly improved over neighborhood and citywide averages.
