    John E. Friedlander

[Originally published in CPMC Foundation’s newsletter Prime Scene, spring 2005]

Touched by Life ... We Help Each Other

Dedicated, passionate, and philanthropic. These qualities describe John E. Friedlander and his commitment to California Pacific Medical Center.

After the death of his wife in 1996, Mr. Friedlander developed an interest in California Pacific when he joined a hospice support group at the Medical Center. “I was immediately impressed by the quality of service, amazing staff and confidentiality for patients,” he said.

As a close friend of an Alzheimer’s patient, Mr. Friedlander experienced another Medical Center program up close, and the bond grew. He says, “My friend is getting the best care in the world, and I am tremendously grateful for the services at California Pacific.”

Life pulls Mr. Friedlander in many directions. He dedicates his time and expertise to such areas as writing, substance-abuse support and philanthropy — he sits on the board of trustees of the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society Foundation.

Of all his academic and medical writings, Mr. Friedlander says he is most proud of his essays on how he dealt with his wife’s mastectomy. It is his most fulfilling work, and he hopes it will offer guidance to others. “You won’t feel lonely if you embrace some of these themes,” he advises.

John Friedlander speaks passionately about his love of helping others and contributing his time and funds when possible. “I see the goodness in people. Take a look at the goodness of the American people … in fires, earthquakes, floods. We help each other.”

Like others wishing to ensure quality health care for their community, John Friedlander is leaving a legacy for California Pacific in his estate plan. He also supports the Medical Center’s current needs through regular donations.

It is this strong personal loyalty that inspired Mr. Friedlander to choose a life-income gift for California Pacific. Through a charitable gift annuity, he supports the Swindells Alzheimer’s Residential Care Program, and honors his friend. In return, he receives additional retirement income with a high annuity rate guaranteed for life.

John Friedlander’s work and generous contributions reflect his humanity and enthusiasm for life … and his allegiance to his loved ones.

“I see the goodness in people. Take a look at the goodness of the American people … in fires, earthquakes, floods. We help each other.” – John E. Friedlander, Legacy Society member since 2003
