In Memory of Kenneth C. Archibald, M.D.

An outstanding physician, and a true friend

Long-time CPMC leader will be missed

California Pacific Medical Center recently lost an outstanding physician and a true friend when Dr. Kenneth Archibald passed away on August 24, 2011. A celebration of his life will be held on September 19th at Calvary Presbyterian Church.

A respected physician at CPMC for more than three decades, Dr. Archibald also once served as the Chair of Rehabilitation Medicine. If his name sounds familiar that’s because a generous gift from him helped create the Archibald/Ehrenberg Rehabilitation Terrain Park at the California Pacific Regional Rehabilitation Center.

    Generosity making a true difference

Opened in November of 2007, the first-of-its-kind Terrain Park features a variety of walking surfaces such as marble flooring, gravel and sand, a sidewalk with a curb-cut ramp, and a cobble stone path. Practicing on these different surfaces helps patients be better prepared to maneuver “real life” situations they will face on a daily basis.

When asked about the Terrain Park, Dr. Archibald replied modestly, “What better thing could I do than fund something that’s in my own field?” His gift not only leaves a legacy of caring, but also pays tribute to the late Bob Ehrenberg, his life partner for 19 years until Bob’s death in 1993. This innovative facility will link their names forever.

Once honored as the Outstanding Physician Donor by CPMC Foundation, his response was also typically humble. “My 35 years at the Medical Center were very satisfying and I think it does great work,” he said. “Life has been good to me. It makes me want to try to continue doing good for others.”

Dr. Archibald stayed true to that desire throughout his entire life, and the Medical Center—and everyone whose lives he touched—were better for it.
