Investing in Improving Palliative Care
As a medical resident at CPMC, Shoshana Ungerleider, M.D., was fascinated that “there are still a lot of places in San Francisco where you feel like you’re a part of the city’s history. That’s important to me because I believe a shared history builds community and at CPMC the residents spend a lot of time together and really support each other.”
During her residency, she was drawn to palliative care, which focuses on relieving suffering. The experience inspired Shoshana and her father, Steven Ungerleider, Ph.D., to make a philanthropic investment that started a palliative care education program for CPMC medical residents. Ultimately, she says,
"When doctors are better trained to have difficult conversations around suffering and end-of-live issues, we focus care on quality of life, instead of just length of life."
