Gifts of Stock
Here's a tax tip: Have you considered a gift of stock instead of cash?
If you own stock, it is sometimes “tax wise” to contribute stock rather than cash. Donating appreciated securities directly to CPMC Foundation - rather than selling the assets and then donating the cash proceeds - is an easy way to give! By giving your securities directly to CPMC Foundation it may be possible to increase your impact of giving and benefit your tax situation.
Rev. January 2016
If you donate appreciated securities, you will receive a tax deduction based on their full fair market value and you will not have to pay any capital gains tax. On the other hand, if your securities have decreased in value, you should sell them first. Then, you can take a capital loss deduction and receive a charitable tax deduction when you donate the cash proceeds.
