In Memory of Jack Bailey
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It’s with great sadness that we share the news of Jack Bailey’s passing on Sunday, September 9, 2012, here at the hospital he loved. Jack served for 15 years as CPMC's Executive Vice President, joining us when Dr. Martin Brotman was CEO, to help turn around a hospital that was struggling to survive. Martin often referred to Jack as his partner, and together with many committed physicians and staff, they remade CPMC into a thriving organization.
Jack’s retirement from CPMC, which began on January 1, 2010, was as busy as his regular work life: he traveled to Texas, played rounds and rounds of golf, did some consulting, and, of course, spent time with his wife Dr. Marsha Nunley, his children and their families. Jack also welcomed a new family member on July 4th of this year with the birth of a grandson, Asher Bailey Vercruysse, to Alison and Craig Vercruysse, our Chief Operating Officer.
Those of us who were lucky enough to work with Jack knew how well he understood every detail about how to run a hospital; we also knew about his passion for providing the best healthcare in an environment that physicians and employees could be proud to work in. Many have witnessed his acts of generosity to staff and patients. As was said about him when he retired, “. . . no detail is ever too small for Jack, whether that means erasing a scuffmark on a floor or personally escorting an elderly patient to his or her destination.” These characteristics were wrapped up in a personality of intense loyalty, integrity, and action. We seldom had to wonder what Jack was thinking or doing, and CPMC is a far better place for it. We will miss him profoundly.
A memorial service is being planned, and an announcement will be forthcoming.
