Biofeedback and Physical Therapy Program for Bowel Dysfunction
Our Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Division offers Biofeedback Therapy to increase a child's awareness of using the proper muscles to defecate completely and maintain continence.
Biofeedback therapy uses a computer screen and sensors to monitor physiological information occurring in the body. It is used as adjunctive therapy for children with constipation and encopresis (fecal soiling). This therapy is done in conjunction with bowel habit training, behavior modification, dietary manipulations and the use of medications. The therapy consists of 6 weekly 30-45 minute training sessions. Requires physician referral.

Biofeedback Therapy Program for Headaches, Stress Reduction, Asthma, etc.
Biofeedback therapy uses a computer screen and sensors to feedback physiological information occurring in the body. In biofeedback therapy, painless sensors are attached to the patient's body. The sensor "feeds back" information about breathing, heart rate, skin temperature and muscle tension to a computer.
A computer program then translates this information into images on the computer screen. Patients learn to control their body process by altering the information "fed" to the computer. It is used as adjunctive therapy for children with headaches, asthma, stress and anxiety, sleep problems, and muscle rehabilitation. Goals of biofeedback are to improve body awareness, thus enabling the patient to better understand how the body works and how to control it. A positive consequence is improved health through relaxation and proper breathing techniques.
Biofeedback Therapy consists of 2-4 sessions and requires physician referral.
