Telestroke Program - Top Quality Stroke Care in Your Community
Through Telemedicine technology, California Pacific stroke specialists are able to work via remote video conferencing with physicians in communities outside of San Francisco bringing top-notch stroke care to community hospitals helping them select the optimal stroke treatment for the best possible outcomes.
California Pacific Medical Center’s Telestroke Program
California Pacific Medical Center’s Telestroke Program allows community and rural hospital emergency departments’ direct one-on-one video consultation with stroke neurologists at CPMC, one of Northern California’s top stroke treatment centers. CPMC stroke neurologists are available to provide stroke patient care recommendations for any patient presenting with a stroke or stroke-like condition. With guidance from stroke neurologists, local physicians are able to apply the most modern stroke treatment with confidence.
What happens when a stroke patient arrives in the ED?
When a possible stroke patient is evaluated at a hospital with a CPMC Telestroke agreement, the emergency physician calls the CPMC Telestroke neurologist on-call for consultation when they feel it’s appropriate. Within a few minutes (usually less than 10 minutes) CPMC’s on-call stroke neurologist will be working with the local emergency physician via two-way high-definition video conferencing to perform a stroke-specific examination and consulting on the best treatment options for the best patient outcome. Recommendations may include tPA administration and if a higher level of care is required or an aneurysm is suspected immediate transport services are available. We ensure that a bed is always available at CPMC for any patient who needs transfer for higher-level care.
Aneurysm patients have access to our neurovascular and neurointerventional radiology suite, one of only a handful nationwide. This suite is a combined neurointerventional and microvascular operating environment. Multiple treatment modalities for cerebrovascular disease can be combined or used sequentially without displacing the patient. The suite converts instantly from a neurointerventional radiology suite into a micro-surgical suite for vascular brain surgery. Patient safety, always a top priority, is greatly enhanced and transition time is minimal.
CPMC’s Telestroke Program Provides:
- On-demand access to acute stroke neurology experts.
- Acute stroke coverage permitting hospital qualification as a Certified Stroke Center for local EMS systems.
- Rapid access to transport services for higher-level stroke care needs.
- Bed availability when transport is necessary.
