Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery
The pituitary gland is a very small, hormone-producing, gland that resides in a unique location at the base of the brain. It’s referred to as the “master gland” because the hormones secreted and controlled by it are vital for the overall homeostasis of the body. Due to its function, location, and close vicinity to vital structures in the brain, pathologies and tumors that affect the pituitary gland or grow close to it have profound effects on the brain and the body as a whole.
Endoscopic endonasal pituitary and skull base surgery is the latest innovation in the treatment of complex tumors and pathologies located in this area. This minimally invasive technique, through the nose and sinuses, allows the surgeon to locate and access these tumors at the base of the skull. High-definition optics and advanced minimally-invasive tools have been specifically designed to work through this endonasal corridor and take advantage of the operative angles provided by the endoscope.
At California Pacific Medical Center, we are proud to offer a dedicated, multidisciplinary, Endoscopic Endonasal Pituitary and Skull Base Surgery service, comprised of neurosurgery, otorhinolaryngology, endocrinology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuroradiology, neurointerventional surgery, and radiation oncology. Together, the team works to treat these complex tumors with maximal effectiveness while minimizing injury and invasiveness.
Conditions treated via the endoscopic endonasal approach include:
- Pituitary Adenoma (Pituitary Tumor)
- Rathke Cleft Cyst
