CPNI Bulletin - 2010 Stroke Edition
Message from Brian T. Andrews, M.D., FACS
In this issue of the CPNI bulletin we are highlighting the clinical results from our world-class stroke and cerebrovascular service. Initiated six years ago, we have grown into a combined neurology-neurosurgery service that can address acute stroke and intracranial hemorrhage in the most rapid and advanced ways possible in the world today. This takes tremendous resources, including financial investment by California Pacific Medical Center, and personal commitment by our stroke neurologists, our neurovascular surgeons, and our intensive care specialists. We now have our neurovascular suite placed not in radiology, but in the operating room, where either endovascular surgery, or open microsurgery can be accomplished in the same setting. This is a novel and state-of-the-art surgical capability in the world today. Our rates of applying Tissue Plasminogen Activator (TpA) to patients with acute ischemic infarction are close to thirty percent of all patients brought to our service. This compares to a national average of less than five percent, and speaks to the speed at which patients are evaluated at our medical center after a suspected stroke has occurred. David Tong, M.D. has developed a novel telemedicine service, to provide neurology consultations to patients throughout Northern California. All in all, it is an exciting time for here at the CPNI, and I thank each and every one of our doctors and nurses involved in caring for these challenging patients.
