Dr. Harry Buncke and his associates performed many of the microsurgical firsts:

First toe-to-hand transplantation in the rhesus monkey in 1964 performed by Dr. Harry Buncke and Constance M. Buncke.

First microvascular transplant in the world, Naval Hospital, Oakland 1969.

First great toe-to-thumb transplant in the United States in 1972.

First rat leg transplant in China, 1973.

First microvascular transplant in Brazil, 1974.

First successful scalp replant in the United States in 1976.

First four-finger replant in the United States to a dominant hand in 1976.

First combined latissimus-serratus transplant in 1979.

First serratus muscle transplant for facial paralysis in 1979.

First scalp transplant between identical twins in 1986.

First microvascular transplant in Kingdom of Jordan, 1986.

First finger replanted in a thirteen-month-old child in the United States in 1989.

First four finger and thumb reconstruction with toe transplants to the dominant hand in 1996.


First tongue replant in 1997.
