The Hippocratic Oath is a driving principle at the Microsurgical Division. And part of that oath, Dr. Buncke says, "is to educate other people to do the same sort of work. We don't have any trade secrets or secret instruments." As a testament to this principle and the quality work being done in microsurgery, the Buncke Clinic receives more training applications each year than it can possibly handle.

The Microsurgery Division offers clinical fellowships and research fellowships.

Senior Clinical Fellows:
Individuals who have completed their training in Plastic Surgery or Orthopaedic Surgery and are eligible for junior staff privileges at California Pacific Medical Center. They may be advanced to Attending status, may admit patients to the hospital and may operate independently under proctorship until cleared for full staff privileges.

Junior Clinical Fellows
Individuals who are in training in Plastic Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery or General Surgery. They may be appointed by us to the Hand and Microsurgical Fellowship or may rotate through our service for 3, 6 or 12 months from the University of California, San Francisco, Stanford University Medical School or St. Francis Memorial Hospital residency program. They take clinical call and may work in the Research Laboratory. They do not operate independently nor do they admit patients to the hospital.

  • Clinical Fellowship Program
  • Research Fellows work in the Research Laboratory, make clinical rounds and attend meetings. They usually do not scrub on operations or take clinical calls. However, if they have a California license to practice medicine, they may function clinically as well.
