    Our Team

    At California Pacific, our liver disease and transplant physician staff includes hepatologists and transplant surgeons who are part of Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation. If liver cancer is suspected, our team works closely with oncologists and radiologists to verify the diagnosis and determine the best treatment option.     Hepatologists

    maurizio bonacini, MDMaurizio Bonacini, MD Maurizio Bonacini, M.D., AGAF is a hepatologist and Director of the HIV Liver Disease Program. Dr. Bonacini is also Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at UCSF. He is a co-investigator for the DILIN group, a National Institutes of Health-supported research group on drug-induced liver injury. Dr. Bonacini received his training at University of Southern California’s Liver Unit, Booth Memorial Medical Center (affiliated with New York University Medical Center), and Universite Catholique de Louvain (Brussels, Belgium).     natalie bzowej, MDNatalie Bzowej, MD, PhD is a hepatologist who works in partnership with our hepatology team to manage the care of patients with acute, chronic and end-stage liver disease. Dr. Bzowej holds her M.D. and Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Toronto and completed her gastroenterology fellowship at UCSF. She is a NIH-funded researcher in viral hepatitis B and a national expert in both chronic hepatitis B and C.     stewart cooper, mdStewart Cooper, MD is a hepatologist and serves as Chief, Division of Hepatology as well as Director of Hepatology Research. Dr. Cooper investigates hepatic immunity, focusing on the determinants of HCV clearance and liver disease progression. He has special clinical and research interests in viral hepatitis, and has pioneered liver immunology research for more than a decade. Dr. Cooper trained in the U.K. and served as Assistant Professor of Medicine, Microbiology & Immunology at UCSF and as a research and gastroenterology fellow at Stanford University.     timothy davern, mdTimothy Davern, MD is a hepatologist and Director of the Acute Liver Failure Program. His main research interests include drug-induced liver injury and acute liver failure—areas in which he is actively involved in NIH-sponsored studies. Previously, Dr. Davern served as Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF. He received his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completed his medical training at Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School.     todd frederick, mdTodd Frederick, MD is a hepatologist with the Liver Disease Management & Transplant Program. He serves as Director of Quality and Clinical Protocols for the division. Dr. Frederick completed his fellowship in gastroenterology/ hepatology, and his internal medicine residency at UCSD. He received his M.D. from New York Medical College. He has lectured on the management of advanced liver disease, artificial liver support systems and portal hypertension, among other topics. Dr. Frederick’s research interests include the pathophysiology of portal hypertension, management of complications of advanced liver disease, and artificial liver support systems.     Jennifer Guy, MDJennifer Guy, MD, board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology, is Director of the Liver Cancer Program at California Pacific Medical Center. She holds a medical degree and master's degree in clinical research from the School of Medicine, University of California San Francisco (UCSF), where she also completed a residency and a fellowship. She graduated from Dartmouth College and was a Fulbright scholar in Costa Rica. She speaks Spanish. Previously, she was an assistant adjunct professor of medicine at UCSF. Dr. Guy's professional interests include liver disease with a focus on liver cancer and evaluating patients for liver transplant. She sees non-transplant patients as well.     raphael merriman, mdRaphael B. Merriman, MD is a hepatologist and Medical Director of Liver Transplantation. He is a national expert and NIH-funded researcher in Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and directs the Fatty Liver Disease Clinic which provides state-of-the-art evaluation and management of patients with NAFLD, offering access to clinical research studies. He completed his residency in internal medicine and served as a chief resident at Washington University (St. Louis). Fellowships followed in gastroenterology at Washington University and transplant hepatology at UCSF. Dr. Merriman earned his medical degree at University College Dublin, Ireland and also completed a residency in internal medicine at Trinity College, Dublin.     adil wakilAdil Ed Wakil, MD, is a hepatologist and Associate Chief, Division of Hepatology, and Director of Operations. He began his medical training at University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas and completed his gastroenterology fellowship at UCSF. He remained on faculty at UCSF as an attending physician on the liver transplant service and pursued his research interests in basic immunology. Dr. Wakil continues to be active in research studies that investigate the human immune response to infectious diseases. His major clinical interest is viral hepatitis. He has lectured widely, educating health communities in Northern California regarding liver disease. He is also active internationally in advancing public health science in several developing countries.
