    Dear Participant:

Thank you for taking part in our California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) HepB Free campaign which is aimed at increasing awareness and stopping the spread of hepatitis B. Your test results indicate that you are:

    1. Hepatitis B Surface Antigen: REACTIVE

A reactive HepB surface antigen test means you are INFECTED with the hepatitis B virus.

    2. Hepatitis B Surface Antibody: NON-REACTIVE

A non-reactive hepatitis B surface antibody test means you are not protected.
Based on these results, there is a possibility that you are INFECTED with hepatitis B. It is imperative that you contact your primary care physician to share these results and comments, and to discuss seeing a liver specialist for further testing. If you do not have a regular doctor, we can help you. Please contact our CPMC Hepatology Department at (415) 600-1020 and we will schedule an appointment for you to see one of our specialists. Please bring this letter as a verification of your test results.

    Hepatitis B infection can cause:
    • Liver cancer

    • Severe liver damage (cirrhosis) and failure
Your chance of getting cirrhosis and liver cancer can be reduced significantly with medical care and regular follow-up. You may or may not require treatment

    You should:
    • Avoid alcohol and certain drugs and herbs, which can accelerate liver damage.

    • Have your family members tested for hepatitis B infection. They should be vaccinated if they are not already infected or protected. We can do their tests, at no cost.

    • Be tested for immunity against hepatitis A, a different virus. If you are not protected you should receive two hepatitis A vaccinations, to avoid risk of life-threatening liver damage.

    • Undergo additional blood tests, including for infection with other liver viruses.
If you have any questions regarding your hepatitis B test or test results, or if you would like us to test your family, please contact us by email at HepBFree@sutterhealth.org or by phone at 415-600-1360. Please do not ignore this information. We are committed to helping you.
