Research Trials
Every patient with end-stage cardiac disease is not a candidate for transplantation. Therefore, our heart failure program seeks to provide patients with treatment options by offering the latest medical and pharmaceutical innovations. Eventually these research efforts may lead to new therapies, techniques and devices that extend life, improve the quality of life and even reduce the complications or costs of care. An overview of current research trials follows. If you are interested in learning more, contact the Transplant Coordinator, at (415) 600-1050.
Some of our newest and most exciting clinical trials are with Ventricular Assist Devices called VADs.
Medtronic InSync ICD System
Medtronic InSync ICD System California Pacific is among several U.S. medical centers to be involved in the research of Medtronic's InSync(R) system, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) designed to treat patients with heart failure who are at risk of sudden cardiac death from too-fast heart rates. The system is designed to provide two distinct therapies: cardiac resynchronization, which is intended to improve pumping action by stimulating the left and right sides of failing hearts that have ventricular conduction delays, and ventricular tachyarrhythmia termination and defibrillation, which protects patients whose heart rhythms may escalate to the lethal condition called fibrillation. For further information on the device,
see Medtronic's site.
