San Francisco, CA - July 30, 2013 – California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) ranks among the best hospitals in California and the San Francisco/Oakland metropolitan area, according to the US News and World Report annual ranking of America’s Best Hospitals.

The annual survey uses a set of criteria to identify the most distinguished hospitals that make up its annual list. In California, CPMC is positioned in the top 10 percent, with a rank of 37 out of 440 hospitals statewide.

In the San Francisco/Oakland metropolitan area, CPMC reached a ranking of 5 out of 47 hospitals and has the distinction of being ranked second in the City of San Francisco. CPMC was also recognized for high performing specialties in neurology/neurosurgery and in orthopedics.

“This recognition highlights the efforts of our physicians, nurses and staff who take the extra steps every day to ensure that we are providing the high-quality and compassionate care we are known for,” said CPMC CEO Warren Browner, MD, MPH. “While neurology and orthopedics were recognized in this survey, I am proud of the entire suite of services and the use of advanced technologies that keeps us in the forefront as a top health care provider.”

Every year, as many as 2 million hospital patients in the U.S. face surgery or care that is technically challenging or a risk of death or harm that is multiplied because of age, physical condition or infirmities. The US News rankings provide such patients with a tool to help them find unusually skilled inpatient care.

“CPMC provides health care for more than 40 percent of San Francisco patients and provides the top pediatric services in the city with more than 50 percent of newborns being delivered annually in our hospitals,” added Browner. “We continue to modernize our system of care as we embark upon the construction of two new state-of-the-art hospitals that will strategically position us to meet future health care demands and allow us to serve the city for many years to come.”

The new world-class hospitals will be strategically located, with one in the center of San Francisco at Cathedral Hill on the corner of Van Ness and Geary, and the other in the expanding southern neighborhoods at the St. Luke’s campus.

The new facilities will be more modern, not just in terms of design, but in how patients are cared for. Moving the focus more from inpatient to preventive care, CPMC will incorporate a comprehensive network of care that will include primary, outpatient, inpatient, urgent and emergency care.
