    The Aging Brain

Every one begins to lose brain cells a few at a time in their early 20’s, and as we age our bodies make less of the chemicals our brains need to work at their full capacity. The older we become, the more these changes can affect our memory. Memory loss is different for everyone. Some people find it harder to recall stored information while others have difficulty remembering people’s names or where they put their glasses. These are normal memory difficulties.

When Memory Loss Becomes a Problem

An indication that memory loss is becoming a more serious problem is when it begins to affect your daily life. For example, if you forget how to do something that you have done many times, can’t remember how to get to a store you visit often, or if you find that it’s difficult to follow written directions, like a recipe or medication dosage, these are signs that indicate a need for professional intervention.

    Memory Clinic

California Pacific Medical Center offers a Memory Clinic that provides a variety of services to assist in early diagnosis of memory problems. The clinic also assists with coordination of medical and community management for individuals with severe memory loss helping prolong a person’s ability to live independently through accurate diagnosis, coupled with medical intervention, drug therapy, diet and exercise. The Memory Clinic is located at 2324 Sacramento Street in San Francisco.

    Ideas to help you remember

    • Keep lists.

    • Follow a routine.

    • Make associations, such as using landmarks to help you find places.

    • Keep a detailed calendar.

    • Put items, such as your keys or glasses, in the same place every time.

    • Repeat names when you meet new people.

    • Do things that keep your mind and body busy.
If you are concerned about your memory loss or the memory loss of someone you are close to, talk to your primary care provider. You can also contact our Memory Clinic at 1-800-242-4227 and join us for a free workshop offering a practical approach to memory problems associated with age and life’s stressors.
